Oink!

"Governor Pawlenty won't allow the legislature to break a 30-year record of abiding by a responsible debt service limit because government needs to live within its means."

-- Governor Pawlenty's spokesman Brian McClung on the sure-to-come veto of the DFL's porcine bonding bill.

The concept of a government that operates within its means is foreign to our state legislators, particularly DFLers.

I am wondering why the state must spend $38 million for upgrades to the Duluth convention center or $11 million for revamped polar bear and gorilla exhibits at Como Zoo.
Some local projects also seem wasteful. Namely, $500,000 to study (study!) the "Southeast Express," a heavily subsidized rail line between Rochester and the Twin Cities and $3.5 million for the Civic Center.
In my view, if the money for these projects can't be raised in the communities which are supposed to directly benefit from them, they shouldn't be funded by the state either.
